Seeing deeply that the “me” is inherently IMPERMANENT, INTERDEPENDENT, and EMPTY. New MJ Awakening Blog
July 3, 2019

3 fireworks

Tonight’s topic at the West LA weekly Satsang was threefold, as all 3 pointers work well together to help loosen our attachment to the “me,” i.e., the feeling of being an actual “separate self,” which when deeply and repeatedly investigated, is revealed to be:

IMPERMANENT-INTERDEPENDENT-EMPTY

1) IMPERMANENCE reminds us that everything, without exception, is temporary, including the “me.” All thoughts, feelings, emotions, beliefs, ideas, concepts, stories, etc. are like clouds in that they are there until they are not.

2) INTERDEPENDENCE reminds us that nothing exists by itself. Everything depends on something else in order to exist. A plant is not just a plant, but depends on the sun. No sun, no plant. The plant also depends on the soil to grow in, so no soil, no plant. What about water? Same, no water, no plant.

So sun, soil and water are as much plant as the green leaves! And even though we still refer to it as a plant, we now realize that the word means/encapsulates/is shorthand for so much more than we may have once thought. That the plant is the creation of the entire cosmos!

Now bringing it closer to home, what about the “me”? Without a living body, could you have a “me”? No. So the “me” is dependent on a living body. What about air? No air, no body, no “me.” So “me” is dependent on air.

What about thoughts? Can you have a “me” without a thought? No. So the “me” is dependent on thoughts for its existence. Realizing this, we can begin to see that the “me” is not as independently existing as we may have once believed.

Btw, another way to see this is to imagine you were the only person alive on the planet. If that were the case, suddenly the word “me” wouldn’t make any sense, as there would be no “other” to differentiate yourself from.

3) EMPTINESS reminds us that because everything is interdependent, nothing can exist by itself, under its own power, and thus is empty of inherent existence meaning existing totally by itself, independently.

It’s worth spending some time meditating/reflecting on these 3 “deconstruction points,” and feel free to leave any questions or comments in the comment section below.

Happy “Interdependence Day!”

Question from Facebook:

“Hi Michael, I take it that these conditions apply to the small self. How does this all relate to the ultimate Self and what is the ultimate Self?”

MICHAEL: Good question! Yes, all “awakening pointers” are for “small self.” The psychological aspect to us which is trying to make sense of it all. It’s view is inaccurate about how things actually are, and so these are the Buddha’s observations on how to correct our “wrong view.”

There is nothing to say about the Ultimate Self as any mind made concepts are not it. Just know that you are already THAT, which is why you are not the “me” the mind focuses on/thinks about obsessively.

Is it possible for AWARENESS to be DISTURBED? New MJ Awakening Blog

emotional pain not mandatory

Is Awareness ever disturbed? Or is it aware of disturbance? In other words, which actually changes, Awareness or that which it is presently perceiving?

For example, you seem to be upset about something. But look closer. Is Awareness actually upset or is it aware of a feeling of being upset arising? The mind may claim, Who cares, I’m suffering!” But noticing this subtle but crucial distinction can make ALL the difference!

Once you realize you are what is aware of the feeling, then you are not attached to it, no longer taking it personally in any way, and are free to allow the feeling to be as it is.

And through your loving total acceptance of it, the lack of making it into a problem, the willingness to allow it as much time and space as it needs without any kind of agenda whatsoever, the contracted pain energy is healed/transmuted back into its natural stateless state, ever free boundless Awareness.

The Fear of Death. New MJ Awakening Blog
January 25, 2018

dead rose

“The fear of death is the beginning of understanding. Seeking is simply clinging to various concepts, goals, things, methods, and paths that seem to promise relief from death, from the knowledge of death, and from all suffering, which is separation and death.

THE MAN WHO KNOWS THERE IS NO RELIEF FROM DEATH UNDERSTANDS. HE KNOWS THAT THAT WHICH SEEKS RELIEF FROM DEATH MUST DIE. THUS, HIS SEEKING COMES TO AN END.

His fear, which is resistance to death, ends. He ceases to operate as the one who must die and who seeks release from death. He abides in understanding, which is prior to the one who must die.”

-Adi Da Samraj

MICHAEL: Sometimes we have to go on a “journey,” only to end up back where we started, but with new eyes. I was familiar with Adi Da, but the essence of his teaching escaped me the first time around (which is understandable, as he put out many books on many topics over his lifetime).

However, I now realize what his profound and almost unheard of core teaching was: that all our gestures, every activity the mind/body concocts is for the single purpose of distracting oneself from the elephant in the room: DEATH.

Death hangs like a sword over our neck every second, yet because that thought is so terrifying, the mind does everything it can to divert our attention to “creating a life for ourselves” so as to avoid dealing directly with it. Thus, it seeks distraction via entertainment, food, sex, money, relationships, a spiritual journey, etc. virtually non-stop.

However, this does not resolve the core fear, but rather just attempts to cover it up. Much like a child who covers their own eyes in hopes that this futile gesture prevents the “boogeyman” from seeing them. We are only fooling ourselves.

It turns out that our starting assumption, that we are the body who was born and will die, MUST be challenged one way or another. Meaning, either you are the body and you will die, or you are not. Which is it? Are you sure? And if you are not sure, why assume you are the body?

I capitalized the 2nd paragraph in the Adi Da quote above, because it’s the realization that there is nothing to be done about death of the body that, paradoxically, brings unfounded peace, joy and liberation. In other words, you finally, for the first time in your life, stop running from death.

This is an energetic experience, not just mental. Something in you physically relaxes. It’s a total surrendering. It’s a giving to death what belongs to death because it is seen that death has nothing to do with you… and never did.

Q: Do you recommend watching the news? New MJ Awakening Blog

news

Q: Do you recommend watching the news?

MICHAEL: No. It may seem innocent on the surface, but you are taking in all those images/vibrations and negativity into your mind. Other peoples’ stories based on fear, worry, anxiety, limitation, uncertainty and insecurity. Once taken into mind, they do not lie dormant. They will sprout spin-off fear thoughts like, “Oh this is bad, if X happens that will affect me negatively, etc.” And so more worries are added to the mind’s confusion. More beliefs on top of the spider web of beliefs that are already there.

There is no freedom in any of this. This is why it’s so important to be clear on what it is you truly want. If your heart’s desire is peace, freedom, liberation, etc. above all else, it’s obvious the news does not provide this.

The mind will come up with reasons why it’s not a good idea to stop watching the news, i.e., “I’ve got to stay informed.” But is this true? What happens when you actually make the break from watching the news? I haven’t watched the news (not tv or internet or radio) for the past 10 years and I can tell you that not only have I not missed anything, but I’ve truly never been happier.

At first, like any addiction, you will go through withdrawals. For me, they lasted about 3 days. By the fourth day I began to enjoy the lightness of not being weighted down by the “problems of the world.” Instead, I just began to follow my heart and let it guide me. This has a much different feel than the mind. The mind is logic based and its medium are words. The heart is silence based and its medium are feelings.

A good place to start is by observing your thoughts. Just silently watch them. At first, since we are not used to doing this, it may seem difficult. But the more time you spend just witnessing your thoughts, without getting involved with them one way or another, the easier and more natural it becomes.

And yet, everything that “needs” to get done gets done only without all the stress, worry and fear. It turns out that Emptiness has it’s own way of moving naturally, spontaneously, intelligently, harmoniously and lovingly that the mind knows nothing about.

And Emptiness, the Now, the Self, doesn’t require anything from the news (or anything else) to be what it already IS.

How can ANY thought change what you already inherently are and have always been? For example, a thought shows up, “I am bad,” and then a thought shows up, “I am good.” Which is actually true for THAT that is aware of ALL thoughts? How can ANY thought apply to the knower of thought? And if no thought applies to the knower of thought, who do they actually apply to??

Notice… Awareness doesn’t come or go or become more or less. New MJ Awakening Blog

Notice… Awareness doesn’t change when thoughts change. Awareness doesn’t change when feelings change. Awareness doesn’t come or go or become more or less. Awareness remains unaffected by content just like the sky remains unaffected by the weather. Stay as you are and have always been since before the body took its first breath.

Awakening is the realization that you are not an object, but the “seeing” of all objects. New MJ Awakening Blog
November 20, 2016

krishna-peacock-feather-3

Awakening is the realization that you are not an object, but the seeing (a verb, but never a noun, as Paul Hedderman says) of all objects. What makes it tricky is that the mind turns everything into an object since that is the only way it can “deal” with it. Thus, when it thinks of you, it can only do so as an object. But you are not an object… see the problem!?

This is why the solution is the removal of the ignorance that is preventing you from realizing that you already are what you seek. And therefore it is knowledge that sets you free because it brings to your awareness what you were previously ignorant of: that you already are free.

Just like when you forget your reading glasses are on your head. You already have them, you just are ignorant of this fact. As soon as it’s brought to your attention that they are on your head, the search is over and all you can do is laugh because you realize they have been with you all along.

This is why seeking doesn’t work. It starts from the premise that what you are looking for isn’t already present, i.e., isn’t what you already are. When it’s realized that, “I already am what I have been seeking,” the search is over and the play of lila can finally be enjoyed for the ever-changing and amazing mind/objects show that it is and is not.

Part of awakening is understanding that most of your friends and family are not interested in Self-realization. New MJ Awakening Blog

dreaming-of-riches-objects

Part of awakening is understanding that most of the people around you… family, friends, co-workers, school mates, etc. are not interested in Self-realization. For them, food, sex, money, entertainment, parties, good times, career achievements, finding their significant other, material objects and the pursuit there of, etc. is what life is all about.

Good for them. But for those seeking freedom, God, Self-realization, etc., achieving worldly “success” doesn’t do it. For “hard core seekers,” Who/what am I? Who/what is God? And who/what is the world? are the questions that will not leave us alone until a fully satisfactory answer has been found.

For this, we cannot look outside us for the answers. We must turn within and begin to notice “something” (although it’s not a “thing”, an object, which is why it’s so elusive!) that before we did not notice. Something that is ever-present, yet never speaks. Something that is everywhere, yet never draws attention to itself. It is looking out your eyes every second of the body’s existence, yet amazingly we overlook it, as our attention is continuously drawn to objects.

The seer is aware of objects… but what is aware of the seer?

Stillness is always here… it’s your attention that is elsewhere – new MJ Awakening Blog

Easter-Eggs

In a way, thoughts are like hollow colored easter eggs with little tiny prizes in them. And because the ego seeks prizes, it is attracted to thoughts like moths to a flame. And while attention is on ANY thought or movement, STILLNESS remains hidden in plain sight. It’s never not been HERE… it’s that your attention has been elsewhere.
