The Fear of Death. New MJ Awakening Blog

“The fear of death is the beginning of understanding. Seeking is simply clinging to various concepts, goals, things, methods, and paths that seem to promise relief from death, from the knowledge of death, and from all suffering, which is separation and death.

THE MAN WHO KNOWS THERE IS NO RELIEF FROM DEATH UNDERSTANDS. HE KNOWS THAT THAT WHICH SEEKS RELIEF FROM DEATH MUST DIE. THUS, HIS SEEKING COMES TO AN END.

His fear, which is resistance to death, ends. He ceases to operate as the one who must die and who seeks release from death. He abides in understanding, which is prior to the one who must die.”

-Adi Da Samraj

MICHAEL: Sometimes we have to go on a “journey,” only to end up back where we started, but with new eyes. I was familiar with Adi Da, but the essence of his teaching escaped me the first time around (which is understandable, as he put out many books on many topics over his lifetime).

However, I now realize what his profound and almost unheard of core teaching was: that all our gestures, every activity the mind/body concocts is for the single purpose of distracting oneself from the elephant in the room: DEATH.

Death hangs like a sword over our neck every second, yet because that thought is so terrifying, the mind does everything it can to divert our attention to “creating a life for ourselves” so as to avoid dealing directly with it. Thus, it seeks distraction via entertainment, food, sex, money, relationships, a spiritual journey, etc. virtually non-stop.

However, this does not resolve the core fear, but rather just attempts to cover it up. Much like a child who covers their own eyes in hopes that this futile gesture prevents the “boogeyman” from seeing them. We are only fooling ourselves.

It turns out that our starting assumption, that we are the body who was born and will die, MUST be challenged one way or another. Meaning, either you are the body and you will die, or you are not. Which is it? Are you sure? And if you are not sure, why assume you are the body?

I capitalized the 2nd paragraph in the Adi Da quote above, because it’s the realization that there is nothing to be done about death of the body that, paradoxically, brings unfounded peace, joy and liberation. In other words, you finally, for the first time in your life, stop running from death.

This is an energetic experience, not just mental. Something in you physically relaxes. It’s a total surrendering. It’s a giving to death what belongs to death because it is seen that death has nothing to do with you… and never did.

Q: Do you recommend watching the news? New MJ Awakening Blog

Q: Do you recommend watching the news?

MICHAEL: No. It may seem innocent on the surface, but you are taking in all those images/vibrations and negativity into your mind. Other peoples’ stories based on fear, worry, anxiety, limitation, uncertainty and insecurity. Once taken into mind, they do not lie dormant. They will sprout spin-off fear thoughts like, “Oh this is bad, if X happens that will affect me negatively, etc.” And so more worries are added to the mind’s confusion. More beliefs on top of the spider web of beliefs that are already there.

There is no freedom in any of this. This is why it’s so important to be clear on what it is you truly want. If your heart’s desire is peace, freedom, liberation, etc. above all else, it’s obvious the news does not provide this.

The mind will come up with reasons why it’s not a good idea to stop watching the news, i.e., “I’ve got to stay informed.” But is this true? What happens when you actually make the break from watching the news? I haven’t watched the news (not tv or internet or radio) for the past 10 years and I can tell you that not only have I not missed anything, but I’ve truly never been happier.

At first, like any addiction, you will go through withdrawals. For me, they lasted about 3 days. By the fourth day I began to enjoy the lightness of not being weighted down by the “problems of the world.” Instead, I just began to follow my heart and let it guide me. This has a much different feel than the mind. The mind is logic based and its medium are words. The heart is silence based and its medium are feelings.

A good place to start is by observing your thoughts. Just silently watch them. At first, since we are not used to doing this, it may seem difficult. But the more time you spend just witnessing your thoughts, without getting involved with them one way or another, the easier and more natural it becomes.

And yet, everything that “needs” to get done gets done only without all the stress, worry and fear. It turns out that Emptiness has it’s own way of moving naturally, spontaneously, intelligently, harmoniously and lovingly that the mind knows nothing about.

And Emptiness, the Now, the Self, doesn’t require anything from the news (or anything else) to be what it already IS.

Q: Why do we seek? New MJ Awakening Blog

Q: Why do we seek?

MICHAEL: To escape the moment. The “me” finds the moment as it is intolerable, insufficient, lacking, boring, not enough, etc. The “me” rejects the ONLY moment that actually IS in hopes of someday finding a better moment that will make it happy. Thus, what IS is never enough and hence the seeking.

But even if a thought claims THIS moment is insufficient, what if that thought was part of the inherent perfection of the moment itself? In other words, that freedom has space for everything that shows up, regardless of how it presents itself. Freedom is your true nature and remains eternally free and unaffected by all transient thoughts/experiences/beliefs.

Clinging = suffering… what happens when you let go of all thoughts? New MJ Awakening Blog

let go

What am “I” holding onto in this moment? NOTICE! Right now. Become AWARE. Because if there is an “I” present, there will be (usually unconsciously) clinging or trying to hold on to something. E.g., a precious identity, a self thought, an other thought, a feeling, a past memory, a future event, an object, a person, a place, etc.

Let go of everything. Now notice what is still being held onto. Now let go of that. Now notice what is still being held onto. Now let go of that… don’t stop until “you’ve” let go of everything. Now let go of “you.”

Have you ever come back to a spiritual teacher and suddenly heard them in a new, deeper, more profound way?

I heard Vernon Howard several years ago but he didn’t knock me over (because I understood so little of what he was actually saying). However, now? Now I find his teaching to be one of the most direct and compassionate, because he doesn’t BS around one iota.

You are not what you think you are, you are not the imposter self that you currently take yourself to be. What’s more, you are in love with your imposter self and thus your suffering continues right up to this very moment!

That until you are 100% clear that YOU are the problem, no one else, the suffering will continue. Only when you admit you are totally helpless and clueless and can do nothing whatsoever via your own power… when you at long last give it up totally and completely, that is the first step towards real freedom. “I can of mine own self do nothing.” -John 5:30

Q: What does it mean to IDENTIFY with the mind? New MJ Awakening Blog

Q: What does it mean to IDENTIFY with the mind?

MICHAEL: It means to forget that you are Awareness and only ever Awareness/present aliveness, and mistake yourself for a mind projection, such as a thought, feeling, idea, sensation, story, belief, opinion, etc.

You are ever the silent observer, never the observed. You are what is aware of the mind, the mind is not aware of You. As Mooji says, “You can exist without the psychological mind, but it cannot exist without You.”

You are ever the silent light that shines/illuminates the streaming transitory play of Maya. You have no beginning or end… You simply are.
