If no thought applies to the knower of thought, who do they actually apply to?? New MJ Awakening Blog

Autumn Leaves Background - Wallpapers

How can ANY thought change what you already inherently are and have always been? For example, a thought shows up, “I am bad,” and then a thought shows up, “I am good.” Which is actually true for THAT that is aware of ALL thoughts? How can ANY thought apply to the knower of thought? And if no thought applies to the knower of thought, who do they actually apply to??

The fact is the map in your head DOES NOT MATCH THE TERRITORY… new MJ Awakening Blog
March 14, 2017

In order to have a “problem,” the mind must be able to define it. It can’t have a problem without defining specifically what it thinks the problem is. But what if the mind’s conceptual definitions don’t match reality? In other words, what if the map doesn’t actually match the territory?

If this turns out to be the case, but we stubbornly cling to the map in our head, i.e., “this is how the world works (or should work),” out of habit or because “we’ve always done it this way,” or “because it’s how we’ve been taught,” we are going to be constantly frustrated, confused, angry, etc. AND NOT KNOW WHY!?

The fact is the map in your head DOES NOT MATCH THE TERRITORY because what THIS experience is made of is undefinable. For example, the word “bird” is not what is flying across the sky. But as soon as the mind label’s it “bird”, we think we know what it is and quickly move on to the next thing.

Waking up is realizing that none of our definitions actually define reality simply because reality is undefinable. Seeing this clearly, we can begin to relax our attachment to words and begin to take in THIS (whatever is currently arising) ever-present and endlessly changing experience nakedly and directly.

It’s the difference between trying to define and figure what each “flash” in a fireworks show “means,” versus simply enjoying the magical and mysterious display in all its infinite colors, shapes, and sounds. The former creates a sense of frustration and confusion and the latter a sense of awe and wonderment of the total unfathomablity of it all.

You have as much control over your heart pumping as you do your thoughts… new MJ Awakening Blog
February 10, 2017

MICHAEL: Roger on noticing that your thoughts, like your heart pumping, are not under your control…

“I’ve never been controlling all of these things that I thought I was controlling. So we don’t have any question about the fact that we are not pumping the heart, that’s quite obvious to us. And we’re not cleansing the blood… all that’s happening automatically.

But there are certain functions that don’t appear to be as automatic as some other functions; thinking in particular. Thinking is a function that we are convinced is my doing. I am the thinker and they are my thoughts. And as a result of my thoughts they’re my actions. Thinking is as biological as the heart pumping.”

Notice… Awareness doesn’t come or go or become more or less. New MJ Awakening Blog
February 6, 2017

Notice… Awareness doesn’t change when thoughts change. Awareness doesn’t change when feelings change. Awareness doesn’t come or go or become more or less. Awareness remains unaffected by content just like the sky remains unaffected by the weather. Stay as you are and have always been since before the body took its first breath.

The mind can’t tell you what you are… new MJ Awakening Pic Quote
January 19, 2017

It’s one thing to notice that the “outside” world can’t tell you what you are, but it’s another to notice that your own mind can’t either. Why? Where did your mind get everything it knows from? That’s right, the outside world.

3 nuclear pointers from Paul Hedderman’s 11/26/16 talk. New MJ Awakening Blog
November 28, 2016

Paul Hedderman 11/26/16

A thought requires an object and spirit is not an object

“Thoughts are attracted to objects. That’s how they can coagulate. They can’t coagulate around no thing. They can’t coagulate around spirit, there’s no defined definition of spirit. They can’t become like layers of saran wrap around no thing, but they can on a thing. Because thoughts are about. So if you had thoughts about spirit it would go no where because there is nothing to think about. But a thought about a body can go on, and on, and on.” -PH

Knowledge is not for you

“All knowledge is about what you’re not, so that you can see that you’re not that. There is no knowledge about what you are, there is being what you are.” -PH

Something happening is an illusion

“How can there be a happening in what’s always happening!?” (laughs) -PH

Q: When I am in my head, lost in a story about the past regarding the way someone treated me, where’s my attention?

A: In what’s not happening. 🙂

Awakening is the realization that you are not an object, but the “seeing” of all objects. New MJ Awakening Blog
November 20, 2016

Awakening is the realization that you are not an object, but the seeing (a verb, but never a noun, as Paul Hedderman says) of all objects. What makes it tricky is that the mind turns everything into an object since that is the only way it can “deal” with it. Thus, when it thinks of you, it can only do so as an object. But you are not an object… see the problem!?

This is why the solution is the removal of the ignorance that is preventing you from realizing that you already are what you seek. And therefore it is knowledge that sets you free because it brings to your awareness what you were previously ignorant of: that you already are free.

Just like when you forget your reading glasses are on your head. You already have them, you just are ignorant of this fact. As soon as it’s brought to your attention that they are on your head, the search is over and all you can do is laugh because you realize they have been with you all along.

This is why seeking doesn’t work. It starts from the premise that what you are looking for isn’t already present, i.e., isn’t what you already are. When it’s realized that, “I already am what I have been seeking,” the search is over and the play of lila can finally be enjoyed for the ever-changing and amazing mind/objects show that it is and is not.

Why no OBJECT has the power to complete you. New MJ Awakening Blog
November 9, 2016

“Objects don’t work as the source of happiness for a very simple reason: I seek completeness when I am already complete. I do this because I do not know who I am.”

James Swartz, from The Essence of Enlightenment

MICHAEL: An object can’t complete what is already complete.

Meditation Question:

Has ANY object ever brought me permanent, lasting, unchanging satisfaction??

Part of awakening is understanding that most of your friends and family are not interested in Self-realization. New MJ Awakening Blog
October 16, 2016

Part of awakening is understanding that most of the people around you… family, friends, co-workers, school mates, etc. are not interested in Self-realization. For them, food, sex, money, entertainment, parties, good times, career achievements, finding their significant other, material objects and the pursuit there of, etc. is what life is all about.

Good for them. But for those seeking freedom, God, Self-realization, etc., achieving worldly “success” doesn’t do it. For “hard core seekers,” Who/what am I? Who/what is God? And who/what is the world? are the questions that will not leave us alone until a fully satisfactory answer has been found.

For this, we cannot look outside us for the answers. We must turn within and begin to notice “something” (although it’s not a “thing”, an object, which is why it’s so elusive!) that before we did not notice. Something that is ever-present, yet never speaks. Something that is everywhere, yet never draws attention to itself. It is looking out your eyes every second of the body’s existence, yet amazingly we overlook it, as our attention is continuously drawn to objects.

The seer is aware of objects… but what is aware of the seer?

How strong is your fire for Liberation? New MJ Awakening Blog
September 23, 2016

How strong is your fire for Liberation?

In Vedanta we call this Mumukshuta, which means “yearning for final liberation.” If you are not getting results from your spiritual studies, either A) what you are studying is not the ultimate truth or B) your desire for ultimate truth is not hot enough, not focused enough. A light spread out is diffuse and not nearly as powerful as a concentrated light (e.g., a light bulb vs. a laser).

If I am still interested in attaining worldly desires then naturally my fire for liberation will not be very strong. So, in your heart of hearts, where is your true allegiance? To the world (reflected ever-changing Brahman which comes and goes) or to the Source inside you (changeless eternal Brahman which has never come or gone)?

Your honest answer tells you everything.
