Trying to hold on to anything, good or bad, creates suffering. Why? Because everything that arises is impermanent. It’s temporary. Like a cloud in the sky or a soap bubble. There’s nothing there but an impermanent image that soon transforms/morphs into a different impermanent image all by itself.

What do all images, thoughts, feelings, sensations, in fact every object that appears in our Consciousness have in common? They’re empty. They have no inherent existence. No core. No solidity.

Which means that the thought/image is as real as you believe it to be, because you are what’s feeding it, giving it power, illuminating it. Like a neon sign needs power to illuminate, your thoughts need you attention to seem real.

You could just as easily lose interest in the thought /image and it will literally disappear/dissolve away. How can it do that? Because it was never really there as a reality, as a real thing. It was only ever an imagine in your mind.

In order to control the dream, the ME MUST believe it’s separate. New MJ Awakening Blog

The ME believes that it can control the dream, rather than being a part of, or another aspect of the dream. And thus the ME, by definition, believes/imagines/knows it’s separate from the dream, otherwise how would it be able to influence it?

What observes the dream?

Does that which observes the dream do anything else but observe?

At last night’s  West LA weekly Satsang, one of the topics I touched upon was how Reality means real which means unchanging. If something comes then it will go and so we can discard it as not being real since it is impermanent. Just like last night’s dream came and went and so is not reality, so too with the “day-time” dream. The body is born, “day-time” dream begins and body dies, and so it will end. Thus “day-time” dream is not reality either.

Seeing this is the end of seeking, for suddenly it can dawn that Reality is not available in dream 1 (day time) or dream 2 (night time).

Reality doesn’t come or go or change. Thus, if it changes or moves, we can discard it. Since everything in the dream changes and moves, we know it is not Reality. And yet, far from being negative or pessimistic, seeing this actually puts the dream into proper perspective! Once a dream is recognized for what it is, a dream from no one for no one, you stop trying to get from it what it can never give you, i.e., peace, happiness, contentment, etc.

And in realizing this you turn to the ever present stillness within, that which doesn’t come or go, nor has ever moved, and you recognize your true nature IS unalloyed peace, happiness and contentment.

The First Step to Awakening: Admitting You Don’t Want to Awaken!

Dreaming II

The first step to awakening: Admit that YOU DO NOT WANT TO AWAKEN!! (Father Anthony De Mello was the first person I ever heard say this, and the moment he said it something in me knew it was true.)

Realize that a part of you (mostly unconscious) enjoys the dream and is not ready to give it up. Even if consciously you say, “Yes Michael, I really want to awaken.” Bullshit. You are still identified with maya, and like a drug, are not ready to give it up. Like in AA, admitting that you are addicted to the dream world is the first step to recovery!

When I was discussing this with a friend of mine last night, about it all being a dream, at least he was honest when he said:

“I guess in some ways I still see it as a helpful ‘metaphor’ — not completely accepting it as the way it truly is. I can see it on many levels but probably not completely. I still want to go play tennis and go out on dates as though they’re ‘real’.”

He suspects this is all a dream, but because it pulls the rug out from underneath everything he has spent his life “working for/towards,” it’s just too much to fully accept right now.

Yet, we use phrases like, “It felt like a bad dream…” or, “I couldn’t wait for the nightmare to be over…” or, “And in what dream universe are you living in?”, but in a half-hearted, sort of joking way to keep it at a safe distance.

Either this is a dream or it’s not. Either its ALL real or none of it is. If it is a dream, than death is in fact illusory as well. Again, you can’t have it both ways… well, actually you can… because in a dream, ANYTHING is possible.

You will know when the “shift” has occurred because when the “world” is seen as a dream projection of the ONE unconscious insanely guilty (guilty for imagining it has turned its back on god, even though this is not possible) egoic Mind (without any caveats, exceptions, or “yeah buts…”), there is a lightness and ease in every moment, regardless of circumstances, regardless of what you are doing.

Even if you are sick or suffering, or in pain, there is still enough space where even that is seen as part of the dream. And the running negative commentary that most of us have in our head goes silent… because it has been replaced with a knowing silence and inner love and light that the world, the dream, can never give you.

The Dream is Without a Dreamer

This morning I dreamed I had overslept and missed my chess class (which I teach at several schools). In the dream I woke up and looked at the clock and it said 2:40pm… (A thought informed me that my class starts at 1:50pm, so the next thought informed me that I had overslept and missed it!) In the dream, I kept blinking my eyes to re-check the clock to make sure I was reading it correctly… and I was! A thought informed me that the clock said 2:40pm for sure. And I couldn’t believe it… I had missed my chess class asserted a thought….

Suddenly, OUT OF NOWHERE, I found myself awake a thought informed me! Now, THIS, a new world suddenly appeared!! This new world “claimed” via thought that I had just awoken from sleep and was now experiencing the non-dream or “real” world. Once this feeling of, “oh, I was just dreaming” thought registered, I found myself, quite naturally looking at a clock to determine what the actual time was and if I had indeed missed my class. The clock said: 11:30am. “11:30am?!! a thought exclaimed. Next thought: “Oh, I am fine… I hadn’t missed my chess class.

Q: Now I ask you… what is the difference between those two experiences?

A: Both are projections of “the mind,” which means there is no difference. The story of going to sleep, dreaming, and waking up is ALL ONE FLOWING UNBROKEN DREAM.

p.s. After I wrote the above, I sent it to my friend and fellow teacher Rupert Spira. His take on “reality being a dream of the one” is beautiful:

In a dream six people are sitting around a table having dinner together chatting, each with their own seemingly unique mind. Upon waking waking we realise that the entire content of the dream was the product of one mind, not many.

In the waking state, six people are sitting around a table having dinner together chatting, each with their own seemingly unique Consciousness. Upon ‘waking up’ we realise that the entire content of the evening was the product of one Consciousness, not many.

In the ‘awakened state’ (which is not a state) it is realised that all that is ever experienced is ‘Experiencing’ and Experiencing never comes in contact with anything other than itself. This absence of a separate other is known as love, the absence of a separate object is known as beauty.

In other words, from the point of view of the waking state, there are different states, through which an individual self passes. However, from the point of view of Consciousness, (which is not a point of view) there is only itself, not coming or going, not passing through states, being apparently modulated in all forms of experiencing, such as thinking, feeling, sensing, seeing, hearing etc, being, knowing and loving itself alone.

Everything takes place in the mind

I posted this on facebook today:

Where do your dreams take place? Your mind. Where does your awake state take place? Your mind. When you wake up from sleep, where are your dreams then? When you are asleep, where is your awake state then? Thus the concept, “It’s all a dream.” And a dream by its nature is extremely light (both in weight and in material!)

My pleasure Martin! For some reason this particular post seems, how can I say this… well significant, if I can use that word. Meaning, as soon as this “landed,” I instantly felt lighter and freer. There was a relaxing into the dream rather than trying to control any of it. Sort of like at night when you are sleeping. You aren’t really doing anything but laying there in your bed (and really you can’t even say that, as that is just an assumption) and experiencing the dream as it is appearing to you in your mind’s eye. And your character in the dream does whatever it does. Well, it’s sort of the same thing in the “awake dream”, the only difference being your eyes are open! 🙂
