As this body is not mine (was given freely at birth to all beings, be they insect, animal, or human), how can anything I see, hear, taste, touch, smell or think through it be mine?
To mistake oneself for the ego rather than THAT which is awareof the ego is to suffer. It would be like mistaking yourself for a car rather than that which is aware of the car.

AWARENESS VS “MY” AWARENESS… What’s the Difference?
Everything! Awareness is inherently free, but when I imagine it’s “my” Awareness, then it becomes polluted with judgments, criticisms, resentments, guilt, stress, anxiety and fears.
Awareness is pure light and all “my” stories are heavy–shadows, which appear to block the light. And so because the light seems to be blocked, I keep seeking, thus missing the eternal light/peace that’s always already present.
Therefore, the answer is not to be found in seeking (meaning more story), but rather in the falling away of the identification with/as an imaginary “me,” whose nature is as real as Santa Claus! (Let this sink in)
Only when this interest in a separative imaginary existence runs out/dissolves will I truly feel/be at home… the free and impersonal home that is always right here and right now, eternally.
“In the 13th chapter, 2nd verse of the Bhagavad Gita, the question is asked, Who get’s liberated?”
Questioner: “Brahman cannot have ignorance. I am Brahman so I also cannot have ignorance. So whose ignorance is removed by Vedanta?” Shankarachya: “Why are you asking this question?” Questioner: “Because I don’t know, I’m asking.” Shankarachya: “Therefore you’ve got ignorance, you just said you don’t know.” Questioner: “Well I’m Brahman.” Shankaracharya: “Yes, but do you know that??” Questioner: “No” Shankaracharya: “In that case you’ve got ignorance.”
“The paradox is there because the individual, the jiva, is an illusory state. It’s not a real thing with real problems. The real thing only is Brahman; it has no problems at all. Therefore this state of uncertainty, this state of inconsistency will remain.
Only when you get liberated, what will happen is you will see, ‘I was never in bondage.’ So the question, ‘Who was in bondage, who gets liberated?’ finally is rendered moot. The problem will not be solved, it just will be dissolved.”
-Swami Sarvapriyananda
MICHAEL: The Real doesn’t need liberation and the false cannot be liberated because only the Real exists.
