Do your thoughts actually make anything happen? new MJ Awakening Blog

hand holding cup

Q: “But don’t you have to think “I will pick up the cup” to pick it up. So thoughts do make things happen.”

A: What is your proof that you hearing the words, “I will pick up the cup” in your head (wherever THAT is!?), is directly responsible (as in being the cause or energy force) for powering the body’s hand to pick up the “cup”? What if that’s just a subtle assumption that falls apart under close examination?

Sound can only ever be sound. So a voice in the head can only ever be a voice. Like a speaker can only ever broadcast information… a speaker has no interest or even knowledge of the electric signals that it is converting into recognizable sounds that we hear as words.

So, to assume the sounds you appear to hear in your head are what is propelling the body around is a gross assumption that should definitely be investigated if one is interested in freedom.

YOU are what is AWARE of the sounds in your head, the sounds coming from a speaker in your car, or the sound of your friend talking to you on skype. And this Awareness is AWARE of everything… but it doesn’t take itself as anything… it doesn’t need to. Because it simply is. It never comes or goes and is everywhere and nowhere. In other words, you can’t get it or contain it.

It’s the search for something “special” or “other then this” that keeps it hidden. Because if you are searching for something, that assumes it’s not right where you already are. After all, if it were right where you already are you wouldn’t need to search for it… ding! ding! ding! Full Stop.

“I was wondering if you had any advice on depression and anxiety?” -facebook question
August 28, 2014

depressionQ: “Hi Michael, thanks so much for the friendship. I was wondering if you had any advice on depression and anxiety? Should I just feel the depressed and anxious feelings or should I try to do something else to make them better? Many days I wake up feeling depressed and don’t know why. I am wondering what else to do to find peace with this… Thanks”

A: Hi …, Having suffered from chronic depression for most of my life, I know of what you speak.

For me, the only thing that really worked was seeing clearly that there was no “me” that the depression was happening to. Yes, there was the feeling of depression, but when I looked i couldn’t actually find anyone it was happening to. The “me” that was taking it personally was simply a tightly held assumption that had never really been investigated. And this belief was the main cause of suffering, not the actual depression itself which was just impersonal energy that would come and go by itself, i.e., not under my control (because there was no me!).

Once this was seen, I stopped giving depression my attention, and it just sort of went away on its own. Not all at once, for like an unplugged fan it still had a certain momentum. But eventually the light within got brighter and brighter until it was seen that there was something in me that never takes anything personally. And I simply rested as THAT, which has been here all along.

Hope this helps!

“The MOMENT itself is spontaneously creating EVERYTHING…” new MJ Awakening Blog
August 24, 2014

educationhead

The MOMENT itself is spontaneously creating EVERYTHING you think you know, see, believe, hear, taste, touch, smell and feel, including the sense of “you.”

Without the MOMENT as it is, what would you know?

Notice that you know EXACTLY as much or as little as THIS MOMENT dictates.

Why don’t you know more or less then whatever you think you currently know about whatever topics you seem to have some knowledge of?

Because it’s the moment that decides, not “you.”

The sense of “you” is NOT created by YOU, so YOU don’t get to decide how “you” appear.

Everything simply spontaneously and causelessly appears as whatever it appears as. If you feel someone has a big ego, then that’s what’s happening.

If you get mad at yourself for “reacting from ego,” then that’s what’s happening.

You simply cannot escape whatever is happening.

The belief in the illusion that you can is experienced as suffering.

And that too can happen.

“Without Your Story, What Are You?” new MJ article for Collective Evolution

“This moment, just THIS, however it’s appearing, when it’s for no one, is always more than enough. But when it’s for a “someone” we imagine ourselves to be, then it’s never enough, for the energy of seeking is never satisfied.”
–Michael Jeffreys

“The mind” (the reason for the quotation marks is because the mind, if investigated, is ultimately unfindable and thus a concept) has a story about who it thinks “you” are based on everything that has apparently ever happened in your past. I.e., the family your body was born into, where that body grew up, where it went to school, jobs/titles it has held, friends it has had, traumas it has appeared to suffer, how it’s been wounded and needs to heal, etc. (Btw, note that all stories exist in the mental realm only, as the body itself has no story!)

And these stories, when believed, are very convincing! However, is this the absolute TRUTH of your being? In other words, is “your story” what you actually, as in literally, are? And if so, which story are you prepared to go “all-in” on and claim is the real you? I’ve looked, and I can’t find one. Can you? Really look.

Actually taking the time to really look for yourself is what sets the direct path teachings apart from every other philosophy/spiritual path. It’s allowing your own direct experience to have the final say, rather than what a book, video, friend, family member, or guru tells you. It’s a knowing that is not second hand or mediated, but unmediated, direct, and obvious.

my story

What if there is just THIS? (THIS being whatever is presently happening). That despite the mind’s never ending attempts to label and define everything—including you!, Life is completely and utterly unknowable, and thus defies all attempts to label it!

How do you define or accurately label something that is never static, but always in a state of flux, forever changing? It’s like trying to define a raging river… as soon as you say, “I’ve got it figured out; it’s this way!” it’s no longer the case as it’s already moving on to becoming something else.

The mind’s nature is to seek, but never actually find. Which is why the story of “as soon as I get all my ducks in a row,” i.e., as soon as I have enough health, money, love, friendship, security, etc, then I will be happy is a fantasy. Because it is coming from the assumption that happiness is not located here and now, but somewhere in the future. But the thing about the future is that it only exits as a linguistic concept, and not as an actuality.

Can you actually find, as in touch, the future? No, because as Eckhart Tolle reminds us, all you have ever experienced is NOW. And the thing about the NOW is that it’s not located anywhere, because it’s ALL that IS. And because it is ALL that IS, it doesn’t require any story.

you have never had a story
