Thoughts give you the illusion of free will as long as you forget that you don’t create your thoughts

In working with people in one-on-one sessions, I notice that the idea of fully trusting LIFE 100% seems to be difficult for many. That somehow they see this as having to give up control. However, what’s not being seen is that LIFE does all regardless of what your thoughts are telling you.

What makes the illusion so convincing is that the body is programmed to believe its thoughts, and so we do. But what’s forgotten/missed/overlooked is that you have no say so in which thoughts arise in you! In order to see this clearly, you have to take a step back and get some space between you and the arising thoughts. Next, sincerely ask yourself, “If I create my thoughts, what is my next thought going to be about?” After all, if you are actually creating your thoughts, you would know every word. But the truth is you don’t.

Note that this is not a bad thing or a good thing, but simply seeing LIFE as it actually is, rather than how we imagine or wish it to be. Another example of the seeing through of the egoic illusion that you create your thoughts is this:

If my thoughts actually had the power to alter reality, than I could just wish/think/believe that everyone on the freeway should get out of my way so I can get to where I need to go. But the problem with this is that what do you think the person behind me is doing?? That’s right, they want me to get out of the way so they can get where they are going!! Do you see how this whole idea of individual control over reality simply falls apart upon close inspection?

This is why LIFE’s natural and inherent peace comes from letting go of this egoic illusion of doership, and simply flowing with Life’s natural harmony. It’s a heart based, intuitive, feeling based experience, rather than a head based, thoughts/belief based one.

  2. Thank you for this post. Sometimes my thoughts become so overwhelming I become trapped in the future or the past. It’s very difficult to think that our thoughts are not us because they have been narrating our lives for as long as we can remember. My question is, when I get trapped in the density of this alternate reality my thoughts tend to create, what can I say to myself in order to “snap out of it”?

    • Great question Trinity! Actually, what I have found to be helpful is not found in words (i.e., saying something to yourself to help you “snap out of it”), but rather, tune into and become fully conscious of your breathing.

Your breath is always present and requires no thought! Simply put your attention on your breathing and keep it there… even for just a minute or so… and notice what happens. But the trick is you really have to do it, not just think about doing it. 🙂

  3. Great message Michael thank you..:-)
